Financial Aid and Scholarships for Theology Degrees
Many theology careers require you to have a masters degree, and some even require a doctorate. Education is expensive, so in order to help you pay for your education, consider applying for financial aid. Let’s look at some of the financial aid options open to students in this field.
Theology Scholarships
Theology scholarships are typically open to associates degree and bachelor degree students in this field, and for graduate studentĀ you can find fellowships, which are extremely similar. This form of financial aid is given based on merit, so you may be required to write an essay, send your transcripts, or show some kind of talent to earn the money. Scholarships are almost always available through your college, and you can also find them through outside organizations. Availability changes from year to year based on funding. Some sources that have offered scholarships in the past include the following:
- Religion Newswriters Association
- Muktabodha Indological Research Institute
- Ohio Baptist Education Society
- The Pittsburgh Foundation
- Wilmington Trust Company
- Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
- Jewish Community Center
- Women of the ELCA
- Unitarian Universalist Association
This is just a small sampling of the scholarships and fellowships that are out there – to find more specific opportunities, search based on your denomination.
Theology Grants
Grants are similar to scholarships in that they do not have to be repaid after you graduate. However, rather than being based on merit, grants are based on need. Some do have a merit aspect as well, requiring you to maintain good grades or meet other criteria, but others are given based solely on need. A prime example of a grant that you can get if you are a bachelors degree student is the Federal Pell Grant. This grant requires you to fill out the FAFSA form, submitting your family’s financial information for review. If you make the cut, you’ll be given a percentage based on your educational needs. Theology grants are also available directly from schools and from outside organizations.
Other Forms of Financial Aid
Students loans are also a financial aid option, though they do have to be repaid. The benefit, however, is that you get a generally low fixed interest rate and you don’t have to repay until after you graduate. You can also request donations from your church or other house of worship, if you have one. Many have a budget to help those in need and you may qualify for a small award.
